On the 6th September had held our third annual Dalkey Parish Picnic. On a beautiful afternoon, hundreds of people of all ages came to the green and enjoyed a very special day.

September 2014: We went to Glendalough to the bedrock of our Irish Christian story. With Michael Rodgers we shared Eucharist and walked the lakes.

The Cabinteely Gospel Choir sang at the 6pm Mass on the 15th November. They were wonderful and we are very grateful to them. It would be lovely to have our own Dalkey Gospel Choir.

Seven members of the P.P.C. including Fr. Paddy went to Moyross on Friday 20th March. We were welcomed by Fr. Tony O’ Riordan and Tiernan O’Neill, Principal, Corpus Christi N.S. Moyross is one of the most deprived areas of the country. The population is now approximately 2,000 people. At its height there were approximately 7,000 but the more functioning families have now been moved on and their houses have been demolished leaving large gaps between houses and the most marginalised and troubled families remain. Every pole has a camera which is monitored 24 hours daily. There are no shops, pharmacies or coffee shops in the estate. The school and the Church are like beacons of hope and light in the midst of all this devastation. The school is open from 8 am to 10 pm every day. They provide the normal curriculum but also a number of resource teachers provide one to one contact for children who have difficulty with the curriculum. There are also many therapeutic interventions e.g. woodwork and boat building, mindfulness classes which enable children to be in control of their emotions and teach them life skills. They also provide cookery classes and we had the pleasure of eating some of the buns they made. There is a daily programme for parents and while we were there they were planning an Easter egg hunt for the children.Within the school there is a sense of joy and hope and it appears to be a safe haven for many. Other initiatives include the Garda outreach, to try to prevent teenagers getting into trouble.There are horses everywhere and the children love them. Many hope to become jockeys or to work with horses and the school has arranged some training in this area. Fr. Tony is also engaged in trying to find Summer employment for some of the teenagers. Last year he found 13 jobs. This years he is hoping to find 20. The contribution from Dalkey Parish was gratefully acknowledged by all of the staff we met. The money had been used to help fund the resource teachers who are absolutely essential.
