After the Blessing of the Boats on Sunday 11th August, Naomh Begnet is resting now in Bulloch Harbour at the other end of the parish, after an arduous outing to Cork 2013 Ocean to City race where she won the Ocean to City race, rowed by Mark Reddan, and crew. She’s also been to Galway. Soon she will be handed over to the Dalkey Sea Scouts for the use of many young hands who want to go down to the sea .

Let’s remember those who took part in the building of this magnificent Currach, especially Liz Murray the lighter of the flame, St Patricks Rowing Club, Mark Redden, James Archbold and a host of others. For more images, go to Gallery at top of page, and select Begnet’s Boats.

The Naomh Begnet was named,

blessed by Fr Declan, launched from Coliemore, on June 1st as planned-

 (including Parish sponsored seat!)

tracing the steps of   St Begnet from Dalkey Village to the island.

This great community project was enjoyed by all .

Partners in Faith April 2013

We didn’t reach the target with fundit .ie, so all pledges are off. However the campaign continues and the parish will still  have a pair of oars inscribed Parish of the Assumption! Cake sale next.

I’d like to thank Assumption Parish for 500 euro pledged to the project, the parish name will be inscribed on an oar if we are successfull! Be inspired, throw a few bob our way, building community. My name is Liz Murray and I’m passionate about connecting people in creative ways. I hope to be the spark which lights this particular creative fire, along with your help.

I have commissioned Mark Redden, artist and boatbuilder to build 2 racing currachs in Dalkey during the month of May. A currach is much more than the sum of its parts. Each slender piece of wood can easily be snapped in two. A finished currach is a work of art, a light craft which can weather stormy seas. As a metaphor for community it is a tangible reality reminding us that together we can undertake journeys not possible as an individual. We can step outside the safe harbour of our own lives and head out into the creative unknown with its horizonless possibilities. On December 1st jointly organised by the Parish of the Assumption and the community council Santa arrived in Dalkey, there was a lovely Carol Service in the church and in Archbold’s Castle there was a terrific live crib with donkeys, goats, sheep, Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus all in Archbolds Castle which is hundreds of years old.
